In this photograph, we can see third-class passengers being entertained by a band playing on the afterdeck of a transatlantic passenger steamer. It was not uncommon for steamships to have bands or musicians performing on deck or in designated areas for third-class passengers, especially during the summer months or on ships where the company wanted to enhance its reputation by improving the steerage accommodations.
