National Line steamships built 1871. The Egypt and Spain were not built by the same yard but still they were identical sisters. The ships were constructed to accommodate about 1400 steerage passengers. This is a plan of the main and lower decks where the steerage passengers were accommodated. It shows the sleeping compartments, the dining space, hatches and gives some details about the space. Main deck: hight 7 ft. 6 ins. - 15 superficial feet for each passenger - berths 6 ft. by 2 ft. Lower deck: height 8 ft - 18 superficial feet for each passenger - berths 5 ft. by 2 ft. This image is from an old print measuring ca. 60 x 30 cm. (quite large).
