Steerage - the between deck

This is a sketch showing a sectional view of a typical emigrant ship from the sailing area. The emigrants were accommodated on the between deck which was originally the deck immediately below the main deck of a sailing ship. This is an example of how many of the sailing ships would be fitted out. This sketch was created by Borge Solem 2001. For more information please see: Steerage Passengers - Emigrants Between Decks.
